What else costs N628million? (or $5million)

Sphere: Related Content

Madam Speaker should just jejely resign. She has had ample opportunity to step down from her position as Speaker but she has just refused. It's only a matter of time before she is disgraced out of office. The amounts involved are mind boggling! FYI, it cost N800million to build the multi-storey UBA House. When IBB's Minna mansion was built, it cost N500million. N628 is about $5million. You want to know what else costs $5million?

The list goes on and on. This money could have been put to much better use. Our leaders don't understand what it means to serve. Majority of Nigerians cannot afford the basics of life yet Madam Speaker and her deputy want to spend so much money on making themselves comfortable. Kai!

We have to stop seeing Government as an avenue for personal enrichment. Rather, we should see it as an opportunity to improve the lives of people. For a breakdown of the $5million please see this article. http://www.thisdayonline.com/nview.php?id=90600

The most shameful thing about this woman is that she ahs refused to step aside. Can you imagine her trying to preside over her own case? Just goes to show you perverse government can be.

Our country really needs prayers so we can move forward and be cured of the malfeasance called corruption.

I love the interesting angle you added to this story...I have always said that even "if" she didn't not steal the money or meanno "harm" the action shows how much she knows (or doesn't know) and what goes through her mind. Less than 100days in office(at that time), of all the priorities, it is to use more than half a billion for "renovation". Your write-up reflecting just how much we can do with the same amount (whether home or abroad!) really drives home the story.

Furthermore, I think we really need to loook again at our national psyche and the thoings we collectively count as priority. I was told that the house is really a huge one with about 10 living rooms and 7 bedrooms, and many guest houses to go with it...Now with all that mansion put up for a "Speaker", ofcourse you will expect the budget the size of Togo to renovate...If Speaker's house is that huge, it shows the vanity we expect of our "leaders". I wonder what 10 Downing Street looks like?

@ Gbolade: I quite agree with you. In a country where people are suffering we expect so much more from our leaders. Our leaders seem to be so far removed from the anguish and pain of the common man.

If you channel the renovation money amongst several Nigerian microfinance banks, they'll be able to start small businesses. Such businesess do not require more than N50,000 to start. This money could have helped 12,560 Nigerians out of poverty.

I also agree with the required change in our national psyche from I before others to care and love for your country.

God will help us!
